NEO SUN ENERGY
Catching Up with the Phenomenal Jeanine Jackson, Head of Sales (South Africa) for C&I Projects at NEO SUN ENERGY
With 16 months in the solar industry, Jeanine Jackson has transitioned from a Model Manager to a leader in renewable energy. Her passion for sustainable solutions, combined with her sales and marketing expertise, drives impactful change. As Head of Sales in the Residential, Commercial, and Industrial (C&I) division, Jeanine blends a robust sales background with a commitment to environmental stewardship. Her leadership—grounded in vision, purpose, accountability, and empathy—inspires her team towards excellence and fosters a culture of innovation and collaboration.
Through strategic expertise and industry insights, Jeanine has built trusted relationships with clients and stakeholders, establishing herself as a trailblazer in sustainability and making a lasting impact on the South African market.
We had the opportunity to ask Jeanine a few questions about her role, her journey, and her vision for the future of renewable energy.
As a trailblazer in the energy sector, what do you believe are the most critical factors for achieving sustainable and inclusive energy solutions in our cities?
I believe the most crucial factors for achieving sustainable and inclusive solutions in our cities lies in transforming the South African market’s perspective on renewable energy. It’s essential to view renewable energy not just as a quick fix for load shedding, but as a gateway to long-term savings, environmental sustainability, and a greener future for all. Currently, the government’s management of load shedding impacts not only solar companies in South Africa but also consumers nationwide. By shifting consumer mindsets, business owners can experience increased turnover and a strong return on investment through solar installations.
At Neosun Energy, our focus revolves around embracing renewable energy sources like solar and integrating battery storage systems and our vision is to make a world impact in the solar industry. We also prioritize the implementation of smart grid technologies to optimize efficiency. As a woman in the renewable energy sector, my goal is to promote energy conservation measures, ensure equitable access to clean energy for all communities, and advocate for policies that emphasize sustainability and affordability. These efforts are essential for developing a robust and sustainable energy infrastructure that benefits everyone, particularly in light of the recent 12.73% increase in electricity tariffs starting July 1, 2024.
What advice do you have for young women aspiring to make a difference in the energy sector and overcome gender-related barriers in their careers?
Women in the technical and renewable energy sectors ARE significantly Powerful. Have faith in your capabilities and potential. Stay informed about industry trends and advancements. Maintain resilience when confronted with obstacles. Embrace learning opportunities, even when they feel daunting. Your perspective, authenticity, and voice enrich the energy sector. Lastly, continuously REINVENT YOURSELF RELENTLESSLY!
What challenges do you face in the workplace?
Transitioning from a solar advisor to Regional Sales Manager and then to Head of Sales within a short span was a proud achievement for me. However, assuming a managerial role over colleagues who possessed more solar knowledge than I did presented significant challenges. The team frequently challenged my decisions as their leader, which initially proved tough to navigate. Despite this, I persevered through the initial backlash. My leader in my previous role showed unwavering faith in my abilities and consistently empowered me to face my fear of failure. At Neosun energy, CEO, Ilya Likhov, has entrusted me with the role of Head of Sales for the South African branch, demonstrating strong support for my advancement and pushes me towards success everyday.
What does breaking barriers and bias mean to you?
Breaking barriers holds profound significance for me, as it epitomizes my journey in a predominantly male-dominated field. Despite my background in managing models and makeup artistry, I have successfully shattered the stereotype of males predominantly leading in the solar industry. I am committed to recognizing and confronting biases actively, aiming to foster a society that is fair and inclusive, where everyone is afforded equal opportunities and respect in my team at Neosun Energy SA.
How do you overcome the challenges that you face with regards to your position, as a powerful woman in a male-dominated environment?
Navigating challenges in a male-dominated environment requires strong resilience, confidence, and finesse. I approach these obstacles by focusing on my strengths and expertise. Building strong alliances and networks with supportive colleagues and mentors has been crucial, providing both guidance and a sense of community. Continuous learning and professional development help me stay ahead and contribute effectively, while maintaining a positive mindset and perseverance allows me to overcome setbacks and push forward towards achieving my goals as a leader at Neosun Energy SA.
What is one quote or mantra you live by and why?
I absolutely love this quote by Thasunda Brown Duckett, TIAA CEO
‘’Job titles come and go, but they are rented. You don’t own them. They will always fall away. What remains true is the story that is told about you.’’
This quote resonates with me because it reminds me that job titles are temporary—they come and go. What really matters is the story people tell about you. It’s about how I treat others , my work ethic and the values I stand for. This quote encourages me to focus on making a lasting impact through my actions and relationships, rather than just on the title I hold at any moment.
If you could be a superhero, who would you be?
I deeply resonate with Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel. As a cancer survivor, mother of four boys, wife, makeup artist, and Head of Sales at NeoSun Energy South Africa, I embody resilience and determination in every aspect of my life. Captain Marvel’s journey of overcoming adversity and discovering her inner strength mirrors my own experiences. Like her, I believe in the power within me to conquer anything life throws my way. Her leadership, courage, and commitment to making a positive impact resonate deeply with my multifaceted role in balancing family, career, and personal growth.
What would you say to a 13-year-old YOU?
Believe in yourself and your abilities. It’s okay to make mistakes—they help you learn and grow. Follow your passions and don’t worry about what others think. Surround yourself with supportive people who encourage you to be yourself. Stay curious and keep exploring new things. Most importantly, be kind to yourself and trust that you are capable of achieving your dreams. You’re stronger than you know, so keep going and never give up.
Who is your role model?
I don’t have one specific role model. All women who successfully balance a family and demanding career inspire me. However, my mum, dad, and husband are my personal role models for distinct yet equally impactful reasons. My mum demonstrates strength and resilience, guiding me through challenges with grace and determination. My dad inspires me with his strong sales background, work ethic and integrity. Lastly, my husband provides unwavering support and unconditional love. He encourages my dreams and celebrates my successes, showing me the true meaning of partnership and commitment. Together, they each play a unique role in my growth and happiness, serving as guiding lights in my life.
